This little project is
a fun way to try out the Magic Mirror-Image Trick. Make a batch
of these hearts for a comfort quilt, or mat individual hearts
for neat Valentine’s cards!

Choose
a fabric that is well-saturated with dye, so that the print is
fairly visible on the reverse side. To test a print, fold back
the edge until you reach the point where the print mirrors. See
more about fabric selection in the Magic
Mirror-Image Tips tutorial. |
 |
Cut
two layers, each one half-width of fabric (approx. 21")
by one repeat long. Stack and pin the layers, and trim one edge. |
 |
Cut
a strip from the stack. This strip is 3" wide. Your strip
width should be half the width of your heart motif, plus about
3/4". |
 |
With
the two layers still pinned together, sew a 1/4" seam on
one edge. Note that the strips are not right sides together
as in conventional piecing. The right side of one strip faces
the wrong side of the other. |
 |
Press
the seam open. |
 |
Trace your heart motif on paper-backed
fusing web. Cut out the heart, leaving some margin around the
outline. Fuse the heart to the back (seamed side) of the strip
set, lining up the center of the heart with the seamline.
Cut the heart out on the outline. Fuse
it to a square of background fabric.
|
 |
With
a decorative thread on top, stitch the heart to the background
square. A blanket stitch works well for this, or try satin stitching
or another decorative stitch. |
 |
Place
the heart block face down on a terry towel and press. This gives
a nice raised finish to the applique. |
