Piecing the Stem
Unit |
 |
For the three-dimensional
stems, cut a 61/2" strip across the width of the
leaf fabric. Cut (15) 11/4" x 61/2" rectangles. For each stem unit,
fold a stem strip in half lengthwise (right side out) and line
up the raw edges with one long edge of a 4" x 61/2"
background fabric rectantgle. Stitch in place with a scant 1/4"
seam. |
 |
Place
another background fabric rectangle on top, right sides together,
and stitch in place with a 1/4" seam. The stem strip will
be sandwiched between the two background rectangles. |
 |
On the back of
the stem unit, press the background and stem seam allowances
open. If you have a seam roll, it is helpful for this step. |
 |
From a sturdy file
folder, cereal box, or similar weight cardboard, cut a pressing
template for the stem. It should be about 8" long, and slightly
less than 3/8" wide. Cut a point at one end. Insert the
pressing template into the tunnel formed by the folded stem fabric.
(If it is too tight, trim a little width from the template.)
Adjust so that the stem is centered over the seamline and press
firmly. Remove the pressing template. The stem will appear to
"float" on the block. |
