Cutting the Main Fabric
If you are unfamiliar with Stack-n-Whack® techniques,
see any of Bethany's books for full
instructions on preparing the stack.
Make a 21"-wide, four-layer stack
of identical repeats, using one design repeat for each layer.
Press and pin the layers, aligning the motifs. Cut a 5"
x 21" strip from the stack. Cut (8) 45 degree wedges from
the strip, using either the Butterflies cutting guide on page
123 of Stack-n-Whackier Quilts, or the
Stack-n-Whack® 45 Degree Triangle Tool. (Click
here for more info and ordering instructions.) Cut these
wedges up the center to make (16) half-wedge block kits (8 left-facing
and 8 right-facing.) You will use 15 kits for this wall quilt.

Sew each set of
four wedges into two pairs. Don't place the wedges right sides
together. Just pick up two wedges and sew along the long diagonal
(bias) edge. Depending on whether the block kit is a left- or
right-facing triangle, the right or wrong sides of the fabric
may be face up. You will be using both types in the quilt, and
it makes no difference which you use in each block - just be
aware that they will look different as you sew this step. |
 |
Trim
the seam allowances at the tip at a sharp angle, as shown. |
 |
Finger-press the seams open.
The unit should be kite-shaped now.
(If it is shaped like the wedge
you originally cut, that means you sewed the straight-grain edge
instead of the bias edge. Time for a reverse-sewing break!)
|
 |
Sew the identical pairs together
to make sets of 4. Trim the seam allowances at the tip.
Note that the front and reverse
sides of the fabric alternate in the finished unit.
