Adding Leaves to the Stem Unit
For the three-dimensional leaves,
you will need 1/2 yd. of HeatnBond® UltraHold iron-on
adhesive. Substituting other brands or lighter weights of HeatnBond
will not give satisfactory results. The UltraHold weight prevents
fraying, and because it is thermoplastic, you can shape the leaves
while warm and they will keep their dimension when cooled. If you
prefer, you can use traditional machine or hand applique in place
of the three-dimensional leaves.

Cut
a 14" x 17" piece of HeatnBond, and two 14" x
17" pieces of leaf fabric. With a dry iron on a silk setting,
press the HeatnBond to the wrong side of one piece of leaf fabric,
paper side up. This will take only a few seconds. Allow to cool,
then peel off the backing paper. Place the bonded side on the
other rectangle of leaf fabric, and iron firmly to bond the two
fabrics together. |

the leaf pattern and placement guide. Make a stencil of the
leaf shape, and use it to draw 30 leaves on the bonded fabric.
Cut out the leaves on the drawn lines. |
 |
Place two leaves on each stem
unit, using the placement guide. Straight-stitch the leaves in
place as indicated. Fold the stem out of the way as you stitch
near the stem. The folded edge of the stem will overlap the base
of the leaves.
