 Adding the Calyxes

The calyxes at the base of the flowers are made from quarter-circles with turned-under edges. Cut (4) 4" squares of leaf fabric. Draw a 21/2" circle on the reverse side of each square. Stitch around the circle a "fat 1/8" from the drawn line, using a very long stitch length.

(To make these quarter-circles more easily, use the Circle Buddies template set.)

Cut out the circles, 1/8" outside the stitched line. Place a 21/2" circle cut from an iron-safe template material on the drawn circle. Draw up the thread tails to gather the fabric around the template. Press the edge firmly. Spray sizing like Magic Sizing® will help to make a crisp edge.
Mark the circle in quarters (if using the Circle Buddies, use the stencil portion as a guide). Remove the pressing template and cut on the marked lines to make 4 quarter-circles from each circle.
Place a quarter-circle at the corner of each blossom unit. Applique in place by hand or machine. The sample was sewn with a machine blanket stitch using matching green thread.
On the reverse side, trim away the main fabric behind the base.
